A Catastrophic injury is a very serious injury that affects one or more of the body’s systems (i.e. respiratory, neurological or muscular systems) while causing long lasting medical conditions that could result in permanent disability or even shortened life expectancy. When a Catastrophic injury, occurs the injured party must be assessed to determine his/her mental, physical and behavioral state. Catastrophic assessments diagnose the extent of the person’s injury, often caused by a motor vehicle accident, and its impact on the individual’s life and work. Our team of physicians (i.e. neurologists, psychologists, physiatrists) are experienced in evaluating serious impairments and are well versed in the SABS legislation and legalities of the Catastrophic Impairment process. They are trained in all guidelines surrounding catastrophic impairment assessments including AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. Subsequent to a series of interviews, tests and examinations conducted by all applicable physicians and health care professionals, a report is produced summarizing their findings and expert opinion rendered as to whether the severity of the individual’s impairments do meet the level of a Catastrophic injury. Such a determination could also be conducted as a file review/critique of a prior CAT Assessment Report.
